Golf Course Restoration Status – Winter of 2017

Well, well, well…so here we are.  The end of 2017!  Unbelievable right?  For those of you living in and around Southern Alberta, you will know and remember that we had one of the driest and warmest summers on record.  We loved to see the warm and dry conditions but quickly learned that they could also be tricky for our team when things got too dry and dusty.  Not wanting to be complainers, we are very grateful for what Mother nature delivered (editors note…we were NOT grateful for what Mother nature provided for us in June of 2013!!).

Here is an update of where we got to at the end of the season along with some video, time lapse, and photographs that captured some of the progress along the way!!


At the end of the 2016 season we had completed 15.5 holes of irrigation – (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13, 15 green, 16, 17).  As of the end of the construction season this year the team at TC irrigation finalized all but 2 holes on the Mt. Kidd course.  They were able to finish 14, 15, and 18 Lorette along with the driving range, tournament center, ProShop and clubhouse, all practice greens and all holes on Kidd with the exception of 15 and 16.  They will complete these holes during the spring of 2018 once the ground has thawed and they are able to start digging again!  Thanks to our team from TC Irrigation for all of their hard work over the summer of 2017!!

2) Finish Shaping

Finish shaping is the process that takes place after the irrigation is put onto a hole and before the sod gets laid down.  It ensures that there is proper drainage on all holes and that the there is proper transition between the fairway and cart paths, the green, and rough.  When the project ended in 2016 – we had fully sodded 12 and a half holes (1,2,3,4,5,6,7, 8, 12, 13, 15 green, 16 & 17).  In 2017 – Goodwin golf fine shaped the remaining holes on Lorette (9, 10, 11, 14, and 15 tees), the driving range, the practice greens, tournament center and all holes on the Mt. kidd course with the exception of 14, 15, 16, and 18.  The plan is for work to get started on these holes in the spring as soon as Mother Nature allows for it!  Here are some images of the fine shaping process as well as some aerial video of what the finished stage looks like!

Our friends from Bos Sod provide us with all forms of grass being used in this project.  The bluegrass and fescue seed comes from Coaldale Alberta and the Bent Grass comes from Abbotsford BC.  As mentioned earlier there were 12.5 holes of sod finished at the end of the 2016 construction season.  In 2017 the team from Bos Sod were able to sod Lorette 9, 10, 11, 14, 15 tee, and 18.  They were finished sodding the Lorette course on June 25th 2017!!  From that point on they were able to sod the entire front nine of the Kidd course along with 11, 12, 13, and 17 on the back nine, and the Tournament Center.  Once their winter is over in 2018 and they are able to fire up irrigation in Coaldale and Abbotsford, they will begin cutting sod as soon as possible for this project.  We will then work on sodding 10 Kidd (finish shaping is done), our practice green between the clubhouse and Golf Shop (shaping is done), the driving range (shaping is also done), then 18 Kidd (which has some finish shaping done), followed by 14, 15, and 16 Kidd which are waiting to be finished.

The team from Metro paving have been out and have completed all of the cart path work that needs to be done with the exception of the work that needs to be done on 14, 15, and 16 Kidd.  Here are a few photos of their time out here on the golf course along with a video to show you their work!

The plan for 2018 and our Re-open!

We are super excited about the launching of Kananaskis 2.0 in 2018!  As we still have some construction on the Mt. Kidd golf course we will be opening in phases next year.  As with all construction projects that are outside we are a bit at the mercy of Mother nature but we are optimistic about the following launch of the courses.

Phase 1 – Mt. Lorette will be opening on May 10th for our Spring opening and re-launching of Kananaskis 2.0

Phase 2 – Front 9 of Mt. Kidd will be opening around June 1  –

Phase 3 – Back 9 of Mt. Kidd will be opening around August 1

We can’t wait for you to see all of the hard work done by our Restoration team in the Spring of 2018!!  Thank you so much for following the progress with us!

We are certainly going to be referring to the re-launch of Kananaskis Country Golf Course as Kananaskis 2.0 in our first year but not sure if we will continue beyond that. I was at Lorette about two weeks before the flood, and have been eagerly waiting for the course to re-open. The updates have been great. I’ve got a reminder in my calendar for the day that booking times are available again. Looking forward to golfing in Kananaskis again. Thanks for all of your hard work!
